BUSH

The iconic Kate Bush, captured in her red dress dancing with her cello.

 She is caught, this woman, at the very moment when movement gets ahead of thought.

 One arm is thrown up toward the sky, almost like a question mark stretching out, while the other lags behind her, as if it is not quite ready to leave the music.

 Her mouth forms a small red shape of surprise, more like the pause before singing than the act itself. Behind her, the cello stands as her red twin; its waist repeats the line of her skirt, and its silence seems to reflect her parted lips, as though both instrument and woman are two lines from a poem that has not yet ended. 

The background moves outward in swirling bands of green, creating a dizzying stage-light that seems to set both the canvas and the figure in motion. 

In this piece, idea and color work together: the painting wonders if the performer controls the instrument, or if the instrument controls her—if ecstasy is something we create, or something that suddenly takes hold of us, right in the middle of a movement.
